About the Journal
Notes on the compilation of Journal of the Study on Religion and History (JSRH)
In the current disciplinary structure of religion and history, the former is placed under the first-level discipline of philosophy, and there is no categorization of the history of religion under the first-level discipline of history. However, in actual research, the intersection and overlap between the two is obvious. The Department of History at Shanghai University and the Center for the Study of Religion and Chinese Society at Shanghai University have been working together with scholars at home and abroad on the study of religion and history. At present, the field of research has gradually expanded from the history of Protestant Christianity to the study of Catholicism and other religious fields. In the context of today's great integration of disciplines, we also hope to draw on the theories and methods of different disciplines, such as sociology, psychology, and political science, to promote the study of religion and history. To this end, the Center for the Study of Religion and Society at Shanghai University is launching the “Religion and History Series” to provide a forum for interested researchers, especially young scholars, to publish their results and to witness the continuous development of the study of religion and history.
The format of the journal is as follows:
This series contains thematic studies on Chinese religion and history, as well as a collection of related essays.
The journal accepts introductory and research book reviews of domestic and foreign works on Chinese religion.
This series accepts academic reviews and conference reviews on Chinese religion and history from home and abroad.
The journal accepts translations of foreign works on Chinese religious studies.
The annotation format of this series of journals adopts the annotation format of the Journal of Historical Studies.
The anonymous peer review system is adopted.

Journal History:
This journal, entitled Zongjiao yu lishi (Religion and History) in Chinese, was founded in 2013 by the Center for the Study of Religion and Chinese Society of Shanghai University, edited by the research team of the History of Christianity in China of Shanghai University, and published by Shanghai University Press; it was changed to be published by Social Science Academic Press after the fifth series in 2020, and thirteen series have been published until 2025; and it was changed to be published by China Religious Culture Publisher after the fourteenth series. At present, the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth series are being edited and published.
Beginning in 2025, we registered an ISSN for the English edition of Religion and History and published the English edition through online, open access. The English edition of Religion and History, entitled JSRH, will be published twice a year under a new publication method:
1. Upon receipt of a submission, it is initially reviewed by the editorial board; after passing, it is anonymously reviewed by two peer scholars;
2、After passing, the article is published on the website together with the review comments;
3、After the editorial board receives the submitted article, it will be reviewed instantly and published quickly;
4、After the article is published, if the author needs to modify the article, he/she can submit a revised version;
5、The full version of the catalog is published in June and December every year;
6. Ensure that the time between the receipt of the submitted article and its publication does not exceed 1 month to ensure timeliness.
The purpose of the above new publishing methods is to ensure rapid publication of academic papers, reduce lag, and encourage open discussion and revision, mainly for the following academic status quo: (1) the external review time of academic articles is too long, and the authors do not receive the review comments; (2) the academic journals have limited space, the publication cycle is long, and the queuing time of articles is too long; (3) the published articles cannot be revised, and there is no corresponding academic discussion; (4) Most academic journals are paper-based and not publicly accessible.
We hope that this new publishing method can contribute to changing the current status quo of academic publishing and promoting the healthy development of academic research.
